You have got a website and you need a content marketing strategy. You know that publishing quality, useful content is the foundation for any successful content marketing strategy. However, creating quality content for your website is not enough: you must publish it regularly, update it, push it, refer to it, share it on your social media.
Hopefully, after a while, you will have published dozens of posts, infographics, pictures, quotations and there will be more to come. How do you keep on top of all this? Make sure you don’t publish a duplicate post? How do you even make a strategy to link your posts internally or to reach out for backlinks?
You need a good content calendar. This article will explain how to make one.
First of all your content calendar should be useful both to plan and to check on past activities
Make a content strategy and think of what information you will need to store about the material you publish.
Here are some useful questions to ask yourself.
Who are you going to address? Which buying stage does that piece of material address? How often will you publish new material? What kind of material are you going to publish (posts/pictures..)? How are you going to optimise it for search? Are you going to have monthly/weekly themes? Are you going to share your material on social media? Which ones? What hashtags will you use? What keywords?
Once you know what you want from your content strategy, you will know what fields you need in your content calendar and you can begin building it. You can make it as complicated, fancy or simple as you need. I would also recommend having an inventory page where you can classify all your material for future reference, re-runs and updates.
In my opinion, the best tool for a simple yet effective content calendar is a spread sheet: you can add as many fields as you want, it is customisable and it allows you to search through the sheets when you need to find relevant information.
